As a basic rate tax payer, if you donate £5 a month, the cost to you will be just £4 a month; as a higher rate tax payer, the cost to you is just £3 a month. The Charity receives the full £5. You can of course donate more should you wish to. You can see that this is a highly tax-efficient way of giving.
The scheme is very quick and simple to set up and all the employer needs to do is register with a government-approved Payroll Giving Agency. The three main agencies are
Each agency has a small administration fee which is deducted from the donation, usually around 25p. In some cases, the company can choose to pay the fee for the employee. Some companies even offer a donation matching incentive.
Once you have decided which Payroll Giving Agency is most suitable for your employees, you will receive their welcome pack with banking details and your unique reference number.
