Birmingham-based charity Rainy Day Trust has appointed Bryan Clover as its first CEO, who joins from Turn2us where he was most recently Director of Transformational Planning.

The Rainy Day Trust operates across three sectors (builders merchants, DIY & Hardware and Housewares & Tabletop) which have a combined turnover of more than £50billion and employ close to 500,000 people. The RDT grew out of two benevolent funds for the industry with roots back to 1843, and now offers a range of services to retail and supplier employees – from a regular cash payment to white goods and even house repairs.

Commenting on the appointment, chair of trustees at the RDT, Andrew Weiss said: “This is a big ‘step change’ for us but we believe that in an increasingly competitive charity sector, we need to move from being a benevolent society into a more active charity in order to serve those in our industry who need our help.

“The objective will be to raise income to a level that covers increased costs and provides additional benefits to grant applicants; to increase the number of beneficiaries we look after; to take advantage of any charity grants available; and to ensure that we receive best value on administration costs.”

Bryan Clover said he was delighted to take up the post. “The Rainy Day Trust provides excellent support for its beneficiaries, taking great care to treat them with respect and dignity. But there is definitely more that can be done to help more people from the industry, and do it in a way that is fast and efficient.  Placing people in need in the very forefront of what we do is absolutely paramount.”
